Heidelberg, a picturesque city on the banks of the Neckar, is one of the best-known and most popular cities in Germany. With its mix of historic architecture, breathtaking scenery and lively student life, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. In this blog post I would like to show you the highlights of this fascinating city.

Heidelberg Castle – A Landmark of the City

Heidelberg Castle is without doubt the most famous landmark of the city and a must for every visitor. Set high up on a hillside, it offers a spectacular view over the Old Town and the Neckar. The castle is one of the most important castle ruins in Germany and combines a wide range of historic architectural styles, from the Renaissance to the Baroque.

The walk up to the castle is worth it not only for the view, but also for the fascinating history held within its walls. Particularly worth seeing are the great vaulted cellar, home to the largest wine barrel in the world, and the beautiful castle gardens.

The Old Town – A Walk Through History

Heidelberg’s Old Town is a real gem. With its narrow lanes, historic buildings and charming squares, time seems to stand still here. A stroll along the Hauptstraße takes you past countless shops, cafés and restaurants where you can soak up the atmosphere of the city to the full.

The market square fountain on the Marktplatz and the Old Town Hall in particular are sights that make the heart of every history lover beat faster. This is also where you will find the Church of the Holy Spirit, a Gothic church that impresses not only with its architecture but was also a central point in Heidelberg’s history.

The Philosophers’ Walk – Heidelberg from a Bird’s Eye View

The Philosophers’ Walk is a beautiful trail that runs along the Neckar and offers a breathtaking view of Heidelberg and the castle. It owes its name to the many philosophers and thinkers who strolled here in the 19th century and used the view for their philosophical reflections.

Walking this historic path is a particular pleasure in spring and summer, when nature is in bloom and the surroundings shine in lush green. The trail not only takes you past stunning viewpoints, but also through idyllic gardens and vineyards.

The Old Bridge – A Historic Masterpiece

The Old Bridge, also known as the Karl Theodor Bridge, connects the Old Town with the district of Neuenheim and is one of Heidelberg’s best-known landmarks. The bridge dates back to the 18th century and offers a wonderful view of the Old Town, the castle and the Neckar. A walk across the bridge is an unforgettable experience, especially at sunset, when the light is reflected on the water and bathes the city in golden light.

A Boat Trip on the Neckar – Heidelberg from the Water

If you really want to let Heidelberg sink in, you should see the city from the water at least once. The boats of the Weiße Flotte leave from the landing stage at the Stadthalle from spring to autumn – and after just a few minutes the Old Town passes the deck like a postcard: the Old Bridge, the red rooftops, and above them the castle ruins on the hillside.

The short panoramic round trip is enough for a first impression. It gets really beautiful, though, on the longer run upriver to Neckarsteinach, the so-called town of four castles. The valley narrows, forests and vineyards rise on both sides, and along the way you pass through a lock – a small spectacle in itself.

My tip: find yourself a spot on the upper deck and take your camera with you. From the water you get perspectives on the castle and the Old Bridge that you will never catch from the bank. It is at its most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the low sun makes the red sandstone glow.

Insider Tip

The Heidelberg Castle Illumination – the absolute must-see

On only a few Saturday evenings a year, usually once in June or July and again in September, the castle ruins are bathed in deep red by Bengal lights. It recalls the fires of 1689 and 1693, when French troops reduced the city and the castle to rubble. At the end, a large firework display rises above the Old Bridge and is reflected in the Neckar. It can only start at around 10:15 p.m., once it is really dark – which makes for a long evening, but it is worth it.

The best spot: from the Neckarwiese in Neuenheim and from the Philosophers’ Walk you get the castle, the Old Town and the fireworks in one frame – ideal for a tripod and long exposures. Come early; on these evenings the whole city is out, the Old Bridge is closed off and finding a parking space is hopeless. The dates are set well in advance every year, so look them up before you plan your trip.
